Catholic shrine?

So I just finished watching the movie Rudy and am doing a school project about how Catholicism plays a part in the movie. There are a few scenes where he goes to a shrine or something to pray. There are candles everywhere so I'm guessing its some sort of shrine. Can anyone give me specifics about this? Like what its really called and its purpose. Thanks
