Yes, the insurance company is only liable if the roof has been damaged by an insured peril, such as storm or accidental damage. They don't cover wear & tear, so if the roof is leaking because it's old and worn out then your insurer is not liable and can legally decline your claim. You don't say what kind of roof it is or where it's leaking, but in the UK there is a very good temporary repair subastance called Acrypol-it's available at B&Q etc. It's basically fibregl paint that you paint onto the area that's leaking, and it will last a couple of years-long enough for you to save up for a new roof.
