My Uggs turned to leather?

I've had them forever, but for some reason one day when I got my uggs really wet, they turned really dark and feel like leather. I used a suede brush but it just.. didn't work. Some parts are so tough it feels like old chewed gum. Is there anyway to save them, and soften them up.
