Why do people pierce their ears?

All over the world and throughout history people (guys and girls) have been piercing their ears more commonly and more widespread than any other form of body modifying adornment. Why? if you say adornment; why pierce? Bracelets, rings and necklaces or face paint doesnt require that kind of procedure
